Fifth Board Game Design Competition City of Granollers Granollers

RULES of the Fifth Board Game Design Competition Ciutat de Granollers, hosted by the city council of Granollers , Spain.

1. The Competition is open to any board game designer with less than four published games. Any UNPUBLISHED board game may be submitted (i.e., any game that has not been previously published, neither for commercial purposes nor as a desktop publication). However, web-published games may be submitted. All types of board games are accepted, except for solitaires or computer games.

2. The Competition is divided into 3 phases:
• Submission of the board game rules and first short-listing.
• Submission of prototypes for all shortlisted games and selection of finalists.
• Meeting of the Jury and announcement of the winner.

3. All participants must submit the board game rules together with a picture of the game materials. The rules may not exceed 10,000 characters. For readability and reproducibility purposes colour backgrounds should be avoided in the rule set. The rules must include the number of players, approximate game length and a list of the game components. The rules must not include the name of the author. A game data sheet must also be included as a separate document. The data sheet, apart from the contact data of the participant (name, address, phone number and e-mail address), shall include the following data: name of the game, target audience (children, families, hardcore gamers, others) and overview of a game round. Both the rules and the data sheet must be sent by e-mail in pdf, jpg or doc format before January 10th 2011 to the following address: ccorrea@ajuntament.granollers.cat . The documents may be written in Catalan, English, English or French. A designer wanting to submit more than one game will have to send each one in a different e-mail. Only 200 games will be accepted for the Competition. The day that the 200th game is received will become the last day for accepting submissions. Therefore any games sent after such date will not be accepted. As soon as the 100th and 150th game documents are received it will be reported in the official blog [www.firajugarxjugar.blogspot.com].

4. The organizers of the Competition shall acknowledge the receipt of the submitted game documents.

5. Amongst all received games a maximum of 40 will be shortlisted for the next phase. The designers of all shortlisted games will receive an e-mail notification on January 20th 2011. Upon receiving such notification all shortlisted designers will have to send out a fully playable prototype. The prototype must be received before March 1st 2011 and it must be enclosed in a hard packaging so that it may be sent back to the designer once the Competition has finished. The organizers of the Competition are not liable for any damage caused to the prototype during shipment. In order to ensure full anonymity, the submitted materials (rule set, game board, game box, game components, etc.) may not include the name of the designer. If a name appears on any of the materials, the organizers shall erase it. The prototypes must be sent to:

6. All shortlisted games will be playtested and at most ten of them will be selected as finalists. The designers of the finalist games shall receive an e-mail notification indicating that they have been selected two days before the meeting of the Jury.

7. The Jury will be made of game experts and shall meet in Granollers on the 14th and 15th of May 2011 . If need be, the Jury may meet either the weekend after or the weekend before. The Jury shall designate the winner of the Competition. The Jury may also award a second prize if they consider that the quality of the submitted games is uncommon. The Jury’s decision will be final. The Jury will value over all the originality, playability, adaptability to different types of audiences and the cultural values of the game designs. The Jury will not take into consideration the graphic design or look of the submitted prototypes.

8. The winning prototypes will remain in possession of the city council of Granollers. All non-winning prototypes shall be sent back by registered mail to the designers before July 31st, 2011.

9. The Jury’s decision will be announced on June 4th 2011 at the Fair JugarxJugar. The winner of the Competition shall receive the prize in Granollers that same day. The winner will receive 750 euros and one night at Hotel Granollers for two people. The winner will also receive a voucher worth 500 euros to be spent at the online game store LaPCra . In case a second prize is given, the awardee shall receive 300 euros, one night at Hotel Granollers for two people and a voucher worth 250 euros to be spent at the online game store LaPCra .

10. The organizers will provide information to all major English game publishers about the winning game as well as the other short-listed designs.

11. By participating in the Competition the submitter fully agrees to the terms specified in these rules.
